Sussex Day – 16th June

Sussex Day, celebrated annually on June 16th, is a day dedicated to honouring the rich history, culture, and heritage of Sussex.

It was established as a means to celebrate the identity and legacy of Sussex. The date, June 16th, was chosen because it is the feast day of St Richard, the patron saint of Sussex. St Richard of Chichester, also known as Richard de Wych, was a 13th-century bishop renowned for his charity and devotion to the people of Sussex. His connection to the county runs deep, and his feast day serves as a fitting occasion to commemorate Sussex’s enduring spirit.

One of the key features of Sussex Day is the reading of the Sussex Charter, a document that encapsulates the values and traditions of the county. The charter celebrates the unity of Sussex and calls upon its people to honour the county’s history, culture, and community spirit. It is read aloud at ceremonies throughout the county, serving as a reminder of Sussex’s unique identity.

Seaford Town Council held a short ceremony at 10am today near the Martello Tower on Seaford seafront in honour of Sussex Day where Seaford Town Crier, Peter White, read ‘The Sussex Day Cry’ followed by a more humorous Seaford version! The Sussex flag was then raised next to the lifeguards huts near the Martello Kiosk by the Mayor of Seaford.

In an age where local traditions can sometimes be overshadowed by globalisation, Sussex Day stands as a beacon of regional pride. It reminds people of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and celebrating local identities. Sussex’s landscapes, from the rolling hills of the South Downs to the stunning coastline, are as much a part of its identity as its history and traditions. Sussex Day underscores the need to protect and cherish these treasures for future generations

Whether you are a resident or a visitor, there are plenty of ways to take part in Sussex Day celebrations. From attending public events to exploring the county’s natural beauty, Sussex Day offers something for everyone. Simply by learning about the history and heritage of Sussex, individuals can contribute to the preservation and appreciation of the county’s unique identity.
