St Patrick’s day is celebrated on 17th March every year. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, although he wasn’t born in Ireland. There are various stories of where he was born, one says it was in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland other sources claim it was in Wales. 17th March marks the day St Patrick died. It is believed he is buried close to the grounds of Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down.
Sr Patrick was captured as a child and taken to Ireland as a slave to work as a shepherd. After a number of years he managed to escape. It is said he had a vision telling him to return to Ireland and spread the message of Christianity. St Patrick used the three leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity.
St Patrick’s Day is said to be the biggest party of the year in Ireland with communities showcasing their Irish pride and celebrating the patron saint of Ireland through a range of events, bringing the world together to experience that famous Irish spirit.
Many years ago I remember hearing the quote ‘you don’t have to be Irish to be Irish, you just sing a little more and you dance a little more, that’s what it takes to make you Irish’.
To wish someone a happy St Patrick’s Day in Irish, or as Gaeilge, say: “Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit!”
