Today is the first day of Spring according to the meteorological calendar.

The meteorological year is split into four seasons, each made up of three months. Spring starts on the 1st March and ends on 31st May. This differs from the astronomical season of Spring which, this year, will start on 20th March 2025.
The meteorological start of Spring always falls on the 1st March. Having the dates of the seasons the same each year enables meteorologists and climatologists to record and compare the seasonal and monthly statistics.
The astronomical start of Spring can vary each year as it’s based on the moment the sun passes over the equator from south to north marking the start of warmer months across the Northern Hemisphere.

Today is also St David’s day. St David, also known as Dewi Sant, is the patron saint of Wales. He was a Welsh bishop who lived during the 6th Century. It’s said an Angel predicted the birth of David 30 years before his birth. David’s mother was a nun called Nonita. There are conflicting stories of who David’s father / grandfather was, one theory saying it was Sant, who was a king of Ceredigion.
David became a well respected preacher and founded several monastic settlements and churches. It is said he went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, bringing back with him a a stone that now sits in an altar at St David’s Cathedral.
St David’s final words were ‘Be Joyful. Keep the Faith. Do the little things that you have heard and seen me do.’ The phrase ‘Do the little things in life’ is still a well known saying in Wales. For Welsh speaking readers Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus (happy St David’s day).
