Christmas Joy

Reproduced with the kind permission of Becky Hemsley

My Christmas tree is up now

And the mantlepiece is decked

I know you’ll say it’s early

And it shouldn’t be up yet

But my halls are trimmed with garlands too

The lights are all turned on

And if you look around, you’ll find

I’m not the only one

There’s someone round the corner

And she lives there all alone

So she loves to see her lights bring joy

When people pass her home

For someone further up the street

This year has been so hard

And the glow around his tree each night

Brings light in to his dark

A neighbour has traditions

That she holds and keeps each year

They remind her of a childhood

When her parents still were here

The man next door has family

That now live miles away

And he’s beyond excited

That they’re coming here to stay

The children two doors down from us

Just simply cannot wait

And their parents sadly know

Too early’s better than too late

And here? Well it’s a feeling

That I cannot quite explain

It’s warmth and light and wonder

And a trip down memory lane

‘Cause all the lights and garlands

And the trees and decorations

Are not a silly sentiment

Or early celebrations

They’re extra joy and comfort

Extra light and extra love

At times when, for so many,

This world doesn’t have enough

They’re anchors to a childhood

And memories held dear

A chance to make some magic

Before the season disappears

So let us keep our magic

And our spark of extra light

Let traditions keep us warm

When it gets cold at night

And let us feel connected

Like those fairy lights that shine

And we’ll let a little extra joy in

One tree at a time
