Autumn Equinox

This year the autumn equinox falls on September 22nd at 1:44pm. This heralds in the start of autumn and marks the end of summer.

The word equinox comes from the Latin aequinoctium meaning ‘equal night’. It is the time of year when the earth is directly above the equator and we have almost an equal number of daylight and darkness hours.

Many cultures mark the autumn equinox with festivals celebrating the second harvest, a crucial time for gathering in resources ready for winter.

Harvest festivals date back a long time in British history, to when people relied on local crops for food and famers would give thanks for a good harvest.

Spare a thought this harvest festival for those in our town who are struggling to put food on their table, and if you can please support Seahaven Storehouse.

Seahaven Storehouse relies on the generosity of individuals and institutions for donations to supply over 100 houses in the local area. Their current ‘needs list’ includes tinned soup, tinned meats, tinned beans, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, sugar, cereal, pasta, rice, tea, coffee and biscuits.

Donations can be placed in the collection bins at: Morrisons. Coop Town Centre, Coop Princess Drive, and Scoop and Weigh.
